Chocolate lovers can learn about the hidden health secrets of their favorite treat at “Is Chocolate the New Health Food,” a free seminar at 7 to 9 p..m. Wednesday July 29, offered by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Union County at the extension offices in Westfield.
Dr. Karen Ensle, a nutrition expert and head of the County Extension department, will discuss the possible health benefits and offer some insights into the history of chocolate along with tips on cooking, storing and selecting chocolates.
In moderation, chocolate has been recognized as part of a balanced diet. It is a source of flavinoids, a group of plant-based substances. According to the USDA, different flavinoids can stimulate the immune system, reduce allergy symptoms, prevent or reduce cancer and protect against bacteria and viruses.
